3T's Exploro Pro GRX has created quite a name for itselt in the world of gravel riding for two simple reasons: it's fun and it's seriously FAST! The Exploro has been designed for multiple purposes allowing you to fit road, cross and mountain bike tyres all to this one bike. The Exploro Pro comes with WTB Riddler 700x37c tyres and Fulcrum Racing 7 DB wheels as standard, ready for exploring the trails. One of 3T's main features when it comes to their gravel bikes is the aerodynamic design that you'll find practical and relatable as 3T actually used realistic condtions to test and design the Exploro. For the best performance possible for the majority of the gravel riders out their, 3T ran their tests at 20mph, instead of 30mph, and also included fully mounted water bottles as well as even throwing in some mud to the equation! The result? The Exploro Pro will ride faster with 40mm bumpy gravel tyres and full water bottles on than if it was a clean rounded tube bike with 28mm narrow road tyres and no water bottles. To produce this aerodynamic design, 3T created the Sqaero shape. The Sqaero shape enhances the bikes speed by featuring an aero downtube that is wide enough to catch the airflow from the large front tyres without causing surface drag which you get from a normal full airfoil ratio. Finally, the Exploro Pro is equipped with a Shimano GRX groupset and hydraulic disc brakes for superior control out on the trails.
TECHNOLOGIES
Designed For
The Exploro is designed to fit road, cross and even mountain bike tyres following the GravelPlus standard. The road and cross tyres are 700c, the mountain bike tyres use the 650b size, ensuring that all of these have virtually the same overall wheel diameter and therefore the same predictable handling. Internal cables, hoses and seatpost clamp clean up the frame aerodynamically and visually. Dedicated FlipTop cable guides are future-proof with in mechanical & electronic versions for single & double chainrings.
Fast & Aero
3T didn’t want the Exploro to be fast in theory, but in the real world. So they tested at a realistic 20mph (32kmh) instead of the standard 30mph (48kmh) and optimized the frame for water bottles (tough to do long, epic rides without). 3T even designed the Sqaero shape to work well when covered in mud! The result? A muddy Exploro with 40mm knobby gravel tyres and 2 water bottles is faster than the equivalent clean round tube bike is with 28mm slick road tires and without bottles.
Sqaero
The key to the Exploro’s speed is the aero downtube that is wide enough to catch the airflow coming off the big front tyre (a skinny downtube wouldn’t even touch the airflow). But at 50mm wide, a full airfoil with a normal ratio would have to be 150-200mm deep, causing too much surface drag. So 3T squared off the tail, keeping most of the aero performance with a 50x75mm cross section that is also close to perfect for strength and stiffness; their Sqaero shape. The wide downtube also effectively shields the water bottles.
