The large majority of British bike rides involve pot-hole scattered roads, monsoon weather conditions, and enough grit and dirt to change your bike from a gloss white to matt black within a matter of moments. For the Pro's it's no different, the spring classics such as the Paris-Roubaix and Strade Bianche offer some of the most challenging riding conditions on the cycling calendar and Cervélo has not only designed a bike that can handle all of that but also finish on top of the podium. The Caledonia is not your typical delicate road bike designed for the idyllic summers day on freshly laid tarmac but rather rides that require up to 34mm tyres to provide grip and enhanced handling, fenders to keep the muck off you and back on the road where it belongs and a carbon structure that can absorb the bumps and holes along the way leaving you full of energy to be at your best. This model comes finished with SRAM's Force eTap AXS groupset that provides a 1x12 gear ratio, keeping shifting simple and effective as it should be.
The Caledonia is the bike we keep reaching for when we know the odometer’s going well past the triple-digit mark. Long rides invariably have some smooth tarmac, some junk pavement over backroads, a cutty singletrack connector, and maybe even your own local Strade Bianche sector. So Cervélo built a bike that could take on all of them, do it well, and fit fenders in case the ominous clouds turn into a downpour 130km into your day. Modern road riders are looking for bikes to handle long-distance, high pace, no limits, and offer maximum fun. By placing lower modulus carbon in key areas to mitigate the brittleness of hi-mod fiber—the bike isn’t delicate. It is made for the way you ride and accommodates 34mm tires or 31mm with fenders.
Cervélo developed the Caledonia-5 in collaboration with Team Sunweb to satisfy the need for a dedicated cobbles bike. Keep your eyes peeled at the Monuments. Faster handling isn’t necessarily better—Cervélo engineered the handling based on the specific use-case. In this case it’s Roubaix. Roubaix is harder on bikes than any other race on the calendar, and there’s zero margin for error. Cervélo increased the rear center (compare this to the R3 that was raced last year), lowered the BB, and increased the trail. The handling is still fast, but they’ve added stability into the mix for a high overall performance.
Stable, Carefree & Confident
Cervélo stayed away from compliance gimmicks; no elastomers or funky tube intersections. Their proven library of tube shapes is at the core of every bike Cervélo design, and these tube shapes all have different known attributes. You can’t cheat physics. Triangulation and the force required to deflect is at the heart of the ‘double-diamond’ frame design, and has been since the safety bicycle’s inception. Cervélo know how their tube shapes behave, and it’s a matter of placing them in a layout that achieves the desired compliance based on that deflection. The simplest solution is almost always the best.
