Cervélo Caledonia-5 Rival eTap AXS Disc Road Bike

Cervélo's Caledonia-5 is another example of Cervelo changing the game. This time by bringing a fresh and fast new type of riding to the racing circuit. Cervélo has stuck to their guiding principles of lightweight and aerodynamics, but this bike adds something new,  a smooth ride on all road surfaces, including gravel. To achieve such a capable bike Cervélo's Caledonia 5 can be considered as a bridge between the classic and trusted R5 and the well-loved and adaptable Aspero 5. The result is a ride that is not easy to forget. One of defining features of the Caledonia series is the game-changing ability to take 34mm tyres, allowing you to smooth out bumps and still enjoy responsive handling even on the most testing courses, such as Paris Roubaix. The Caledonia-5 differentiates itself from Caledonia by being more race orientated. It has a more aerodynamic design, to both the tube shaping and the cockpit which boasts fully internal cable routing throughout. Having been developed in partnership with Team Sunweb this really is a bike that's as ready to race as it is to enjoy long days in the saddle. This version of the Caledonia 5 is finished off with the new 12 speed Rival electronic groupset from SRAM and DT Swiss E1800 wheels.

The Caledonia-5

The Caledonia is the bike we keep reaching for when we know the odometer’s going well past the triple digit mark. Long rides invariably have some smooth tarmac, some junk pavement over backroads, a cutty singletrack connector, and maybe even your own local Strade Bianche sector. So Cervélo built a bike that could take on all of them, do it well, and fit fenders in case the ominous clouds turn into a downpour 130km into your day. Modern road riders are looking for bikes to handle long distance, high pace, no limits and offer maximum fun. By placing lower modulus carbon in key areas to mitigate the brittleness of hi-mod fiber—the bike isn’t delicate. It is made for the way you ride and accommodates 34mm tires or 31mm with fenders.

Race-Bred

Cervélo developed the Caledonia-5 in collaboration with Team Sunweb to satisfy the need for a dedicated cobbles bike. Keep your eyes peeled at the Monuments. Faster handling isn’t necessarily better—Cervélo engineered the handling based on the specific use-case. In this case it’s Roubaix. Roubaix is harder on bikes than any other race on the calendar, and there’s zero margin for error. Cervélo increased the rear center (compare this to the R3 that was raced last year), lowered the BB, and increased the trail. The handling is still fast, but they’ve added stability into the mix for a high overall performance.

Stable, Carefree & Confident

Cervélo stayed away from compliance gimmicks; no elastomers or funky tube intersections. Their proven library of tube shapes is at the core of every bike Cervélo design, and these tube shapes all have different known attributes. You can’t cheat physics. Triangulation and the force required to deflect is at the heart of the ‘double-diamond’ frame design, and has been since the safety bicycle’s inception. Cervélo know how their tube shapes behave, and it’s a matter of placing them in a layout that achieves the desired compliance based on that deflection. The simplest solution is almost always the best.
