Cervélo's brand new Caledonia-5 is a new kind of bike, bringing a fresh and fast new type of riding to the racing circuit, one that's lightweight, aerodynamic and smooth on all road surfaces, even gravel. Cervélo's Caledonia can be considered an incredible bike that's a cross between their classic and reliable R5 with their well loved and nimble Aspero, creating an affair to be remembered. One of the best features of the Caledonia series is it's game changing ability to take 34mm tyres, allowing you to smooth out bumps and still experience fast handling even on the toughest of roads to ride, such as Paris Roubaix it's self. The Caledonia-5 is considered the racing bike of the sereis as the better between the two models with a more aerodynamic design, including more streamlined tube shaping and fully internal cable routing throughout. The Caledonia-5 has been created in partnership with Team Sunweb with the aim of this being there world tour bike of choice so you know it'll meet your sportive needs as well. To keep the Caledonia fast on all surfaces, Cervélo lowered the bottom bracket and increased the rear center to allow for a stable and responsive ride even out on the trails. The 5 version has been designed with racing inmind and so features an integrated stem and two cap bearing option to allow for an adaptable stack height, from as aggressive as 7mm all the way to a relaxed 22mm, all without the use of spacers. To allow you to alter the Caledonia-5 as you please, Cervélo fitted it with a front derailleur mount that can easily be removed and replaced or even swapped out for a 1x system if you'd prefer. Finally, to finish off your race ready Caledonia, Cervélo equipped this model with a Shimano Ultegra Di2 groupset for crisp and reliable shifting as well as hydraulic disc brakes to maximise your control even in the worst of weather conditions- particularly unpredictable touring through the mountains!
The Caledonia is the bike we keep reaching for when we know the odometer’s going well past the triple digit mark. Long rides invariably have some smooth tarmac, some junk pavement over backroads, a cutty singletrack connector, and maybe even your own local Strade Bianche sector. So Cervélo built a bike that could take on all of them, do it well, and fit fenders in case the ominous clouds turn into a downpour 130km into your day. Modern road riders are looking for bikes to handle long distance, high pace, no limits and offer maximum fun. By placing lower modulus carbon in key areas to mitigate the brittleness of hi-mod fiber—the bike isn’t delicate. It is made for the way you ride and accommodates 34mm tires or 31mm with fenders.
Cervélo developed the Caledonia-5 in collaboration with Team Sunweb to satisfy the need for a dedicated cobbles bike. Keep your eyes peeled at the Monuments. Faster handling isn’t necessarily better—Cervélo engineered the handling based on the specific use-case. In this case it’s Roubaix. Roubaix is harder on bikes than any other race on the calendar, and there’s zero margin for error. Cervélo increased the rear center (compare this to the R3 that was raced last year), lowered the BB, and increased the trail. The handling is still fast, but they’ve added stability into the mix for a high overall performance.
Stable, Carefree & Confident
Cervélo stayed away from compliance gimmicks; no elastomers or funky tube intersections. Their proven library of tube shapes is at the core of every bike Cervélo design, and these tube shapes all have different known attributes. You can’t cheat physics. Triangulation and the force required to deflect is at the heart of the ‘double-diamond’ frame design, and has been since the safety bicycle’s inception. Cervélo know how their tube shapes behave, and it’s a matter of placing them in a layout that achieves the desired compliance based on that deflection. The simplest solution is almost always the best.
