The Cervélo R5 is one of our all-time favourite bikes here at The Tri Store so when we were invited to be one of the first to ride the new 2018 bike in Austria we were intrigued to see if it bettered what was an already awesome platform. The new position with a shorter head tube definitely feels more like a race bike than the previous version. With ingenious and seemingly imperceptible changes to the geometry of the bike the new R5 loses none of the sure-footed and assured ride of its predecessor. Yet again Cervélo has improved on what we already thought was a perfect bike and now available in a limited edition colourway it just keeps getting better.
The R5 frame is not just lightweight, it's not just fast, it's not just comfortable. The R5 is the perfect blend of a uniquely designed bike that there is simply no match for. It is quiet, it is stable with 34% more stiffness, it handles brilliantly with a lowered bottom bracket and its trail geometry means that the bike fits beautifully to each and every rider. Featuring disc-brake technology that is set to take over the world of cycling, including the pro peloton, the R5 offers ultimate reliability in each and every condition whilst also providing even better aerodynamics.
Premium Road Performance
The ultimate all-around race machine deserves optimal component packages to maximize performance, and the R5 delivers. A revamped handling geometry balances stability and responsiveness for a ride experience that will make your confidence soar and your rivals curse.
Stiffer, Faster, Better
The stiffest rim brake-equipped road frame Cervélo have ever produced joins forces with performance-enhancing comfort, confidence-inspiring handling, and world-class lightweight design and aerodynamics made possible by innovative new Squoval Max tube shapes.
Cervelo developed BBright to take advantage of the fact that oversized frame tubes are stiffer and lighter. On the right side, frame tubes are already as wide as possible; any wider and they’d hit the chainrings. But on the left side there are no chainrings, so BBright makes use of this extra space by extending the BB shell by 11 millimetres, nearly doubling the width of the left chainstay. At the same time, the drive-side dimensions of the frame are identical to BB30 and provide plenty of clearance for a wide range of cranks, including those with power meters.
Tough, compression-moulded dropouts save weight with no sacrifice in strength compared to traditional metal dropouts.
Seatstays and chainstays are bonded into hollow dropouts, instead of the other way around. Bonding these precision-moulded surfaces reduces weight, and gives the internal rear derailleur cable a straight shot through the chainstay and dropout, eliminating bends and cable friction.
The library of tube shapes allows Cervelo engineers to “dial in” the weight-saving, aero, stiffness and compliance properties that best suit specific areas of a frame.
Square shapes resist bending the best, while round shapes are tops when it comes to torsion. Since different frame tubes see a variable mix of bending and torsional loads, a careful combination of these shapes can offer the best of both worlds. Enter Squoval, which combines the attributes of a square and an oval to achieve an ideal balance of stiffness, weight and aerodynamics.
