The R5 is now in its fourth generation, and four generations of research and development have led to a refined masterpiece. The brief for the R5 has never changed, create a best in class stiffness to weight ratio, which can see its rider get to the top first. The new and improved R5 takes that a step further and understands the top is not always the finish line. It's clear more time is made up in the climb, and whilst it's hard to win a race on a decent, it's easy to lose one. With that in mind, this R5 delivers more than ever in handling, poise and comfort, to make sure you get down as quickly as you get up the mountain. The R5 can clear 28mm, proven to enhance aerodynamics and add to the range of options of road surfaces to ride on and routes to explore. The integrated bar and stem, however, is one of the key highlights of the latest R5, it saves you watts, reduces the overall weight of the bike and improves your control in and out of tricky descents. Finally, this model of the R5 is finished with SRAM's new Force AXS hydraulic disc groupset, including power meter. The 12-speed design increases your range of gears, reduces the ratios between the gears and also makes gear shifting even quieter and more subtle than before. The R5 is a store favourite and fantastic for riding between the French and Swiss Alps or just as good in your local sportive, or Sunday club run.
The Lighter The Better
The new R5 frame is 130 grams lighter than the third generation, that's a 16% saving on a frame that was considered best in class. To achieve this, the frame itself comes in at 703 grams, which, when coupled with the 329-gram fork results in a total weight of just over 1kg. The new handlebar and stem, which have integrated cabling are partly to thank for this coming in at 12grams lighter, whilst the Seatpost delivers further shavings of 20 grams at the same time as becoming more aero.
If the third generation of the R5 had one drawback it was the bone-jarring stiffness. Reducing stiffness may sound counterproductive for the GOAT of climbing bikes, but in doing so Cervelo has achieved a more comfortable ride. Their engineers researched the perfect ratio between head tube and bottom bracket stiffness to generate the magic formula for ride quality, and the results are mind-blowing.
As well as the freedom to use a wider range of tyre sizes, dozens of small, satisfying design details separate good from extraordinary: Helpful thru-axle installation graphics, a subtle-yet-robust chain-stay protector, a sleek fitting cap, an internal cable rooting on the bar and stem that offer aero savings as well as a cleaner look and an aero seat-post with integrated clamp and cover...the list goes on.
