Product Information

Felt AR Advanced Disc Ultegra Di2 Road Bike

Felt first released their well renowned AR road racing bike 10 whole years ago and it's been 6 years since they've released a new and improved design of their AR model. Now 6 years is a long time and a lot changes in that time, let alone in the world of cycling so you can imagine just how much research and design alterating Felt has put into place to bring you an all new, more advanced AR race ready ride. The brand new AR has first of all been fitted with disc brakes, a trend that is becoming more and more common in today's riding world simply because of the unmatchable stopping power and control they provide you with, maintaining a reliable performance in all weather conditions. The next step Felt took was to dramatically improve their aerodynamics using their most advanced computational fluid dynamics software that is in the industry. Using wind tunnel testing and rapid-prototyping, Felt created a new aerofoil design that allows the new AR to be a whole 9% faster than the previous model. To further improve the AR, felt re-desgined the cockpit to bring you a bike that corner's even more gracefully with a feather like steering feel to provide you with accurate as well as high performing handling so that you can race at the top of your game with a bike that matches your top-level needs. The new advanced AR now features a seatpost that provides 112% more flex than the previous AR and 63% more flex than a traditional, round 27.2mm seatpost. To complete the Advanced AR with a high level finish, Felt equipped this model with a Shimano Ultegra Di2 groupset to ensure you're ready to race fast with components that don't waste time when you're on the attack. Finally, with tubeless-ready Reynolds AR58 wheels you're fully equipped for a fast and furious race.

Big Changes

New tube shapes are present throughout the AR. In the rear triangle, the chainstays and seat tube take on a new “fish lips” design, which allows for wider tires of up to 30mm, up from 25mm, and also improves airflow. Felt’s new semi-integrated system strikes a nice balance between aerodynamics and user-friendliness. Cables route under and through the stem, to a separate Devox Carbon Aero handlebar. The whole system maintains the adjustability of a traditional handlebar/stem combo. Felt utilizes a form of carbon called TeXtreme, which uses flat tapes of carbon, rather than yarns of fibre, to pack more carbon into a given area for stronger layups needing less resin. This carbon replaces heavy unidirectional carbon in Felt’s layup.

Disc Brakes Only

When Felt went back to the drawing board to redesign the AR, there was no question that it would be disc only. Beyond providing more stopping power in all riding conditions, disc brakes remove the headaches caused by aerodynamically optimized, but difficult to adjust, brake callipers on the previous AR. Felt says there was also a demand from AR owners to see a disc-brake option. Disc brakes are so integral to the new design that the brand is wholesale saying goodbye to rim brakes on the AR (though they are still available in the more traditional FR road frame).

Added Compliance

Felt wanted to make the new AR not only faster, but more comfortable and better handling as well. One of the biggest upgrades in compliance comes from the new proprietary seatpost, which features a slot in its centre, allowing both halves of the post to flex independently, resulting in a claimed 112 percent more deflection at the seatpost than before. To clean up airflow around the seatpsot, Felt includes a rubber piece that plugs the hole in the seatpost. Additionally, a damping sleeve made of plastic and rubber fits around the seatpost inside the frame to further soak up high-frequency road buzz. The option to run high-volume tubeless tyres offers an additional way to introduce compliance.
