Felt AR Advanced Disc Ultegra Road Bike

For the first time since 2014, Felt has released their brand new AR racing road bike and it doesn't disappoint. When Felt released their first AR over 10 years ago, it quickly built up a reputation and its last model released in 2014 has been renowned for breaking the mould and taking aerodynamics to the next level. But a lot changes in 6 years, especially in the racing world which is why Felt's brand-new AR features a completely new design to change the game yet again. First of all, Felt fitted the new AR bike with disc brakes to provide you with superior handling and stopping power no matter the weather conditions when it comes to race day. Next, Felt took to researching how they could improve the aerodynamics of the AR using the most advanced computational fluid dynamics software in the industry. Taking a holistic approach, Felt used wind tunnel testing and rapid-prototyping to build a new aerofoil design, making the new AR 9% faster than it's predecessor. This felt AR features a newly designed cockpit system to allow the bike to corner with a light steering feel and blissful handling. Felt also updated their seatpost during their aerofoil project, fine-tuning their signature split design to increase overall rider comfort as well as providing a co-moulded rubber insert to improve compliance. Overall, the new AR seatpost provides 112% more flex and a whole 63% more flex than a traditional, round 27.2mm seatpost, proving aero can be comfortable. To finish off the AR, Felt partnered with Shimano to bring you a complete Ultegra groupset for gracefully smooth shifting and tubeless-ready Reynolds AR58 wheels for a fast ride, ready for an impressive performance on race day.

Full Specification

Big Changes

New tube shapes are present throughout the AR. In the rear triangle, the chainstays and seat tube take on a new “fish lips” design, which allows for wider tires of up to 30mm, up from 25mm, and also improves airflow. Felt’s new semi-integrated system strikes a nice balance between aerodynamics and user-friendliness. Cables route under and through the stem, to a separate Devox Carbon Aero handlebar. The whole system maintains the adjustability of a traditional handlebar/stem combo. Felt utilizes a form of carbon called TeXtreme, which uses flat tapes of carbon, rather than yarns of fibre, to pack more carbon into a given area for stronger layups needing less resin. This carbon replaces heavy unidirectional carbon in Felt’s layup.

Disc Brakes Only

When Felt went back to the drawing board to redesign the AR, there was no question that it would be disc only. Beyond providing more stopping power in all riding conditions, disc brakes remove the headaches caused by aerodynamically optimized, but difficult to adjust, brake callipers on the previous AR. Felt says there was also a demand from AR owners to see a disc-brake option. Disc brakes are so integral to the new design that the brand is wholesale saying goodbye to rim brakes on the AR (though they are still available in the more traditional FR road frame).

Added Compliance

Felt wanted to make the new AR not only faster, but more comfortable and better handling as well. One of the biggest upgrades in compliance comes from the new proprietary seatpost, which features a slot in its centre, allowing both halves of the post to flex independently, resulting in a claimed 112 percent more deflection at the seatpost than before. To clean up airflow around the seatpsot, Felt includes a rubber piece that plugs the hole in the seatpost. Additionally, a damping sleeve made of plastic and rubber fits around the seatpost inside the frame to further soak up high-frequency road buzz. The option to run high-volume tubeless tyres offers an additional way to introduce compliance.
